Downtown Millburn and Restaurant Week Going on Now

This week is Downtown Millburn and Restaurant week.

 The two events used to be separate, but now they are combined to make one fabulous week. Many local merchants and eateries are participating, offering special discounts, chances to win gift certificates, and  some are even serving refreshments while you shop.

  Most stores are offering a chance to win a $25 gift certificate - no purchase necessary.  Once you enter those drawings, you are automatically entered for a chance to win a Grand Prize drawing for an Apple iPad - donated by Investors Savings Bank, a color Kindle - donated by www.MOM.COM and two $25 gift cards donated by Valley National Bank.

From established businesses to those businesses that are new to the scene, there is something for everyone this week.  At the six-week-old La Pergola on Essex Street, owners Driola and Agron Kloshi have transformed the space into a  beautiful restaurant with a sophisticated New York vibe.  Upscale, simple, clean décor, with just the right splash of color from the fabulous artwork and a romantic touch with fresh flowers.  Their farm-to-table  eatery is based on Driola’s roots in Sienna, Italy. Everything is made by hand.  They claim not to have a freezer because they believe in using only the freshest ingredients. 

Driola said, “It’s a place where husbands can tell their wives to put on their heels to come here.”   The new restaurant is doing quite well.  “We want people to smile when they are here.”

Another participating restaurant is Bagel Chateau, a third-generation family business. It started in the 1940’s in the Bronx, later to Brooklyn and Manhattan and to Millburn in 1978.

Paul Wayne, who is the owner's son, said, “We love being here, downtown Millburn is great.  And we are really looking forward to the nice weather.  We have watched families grow up here and we have welcomed new families.”  They have a new Middle Eastern menu including falafel, hummus, Israeli salad and Moroccan eggplant.  Customer, Jill Zimmer of South Orange, stopped in on the way to an appointment, “I always like their bagels and eggs even when it’s not breakfast time.”  Janet Brief Landau said she loves the great bagels and chopped salads.

Suki’s has been on Millburn Avenue for five years.  A special children’s boutique that has a plethora of must-haves for the young set.  Customer Margaret Podell of Short Hills, agrees.  She said, I have been shopping here for five years because they have beautiful and classic clothes.  Not like the stuff you see everywhere else.” 

Eye-Q Opticians on Main Street, has a large selection of frames.  Owner Harry Roth said he takes special time and care to make sure each client gets exactly what they want and need.  Michele Bass of Short Hills said was pleased with the attention and the selection. 

Via Roxy Shoes on Millburn Avenue, has  shoes, handbags and jewelry. Trend fashion is  Roxy Shoes's speicalty.  It has a fun atmosphere, the latest styles are featured and customers are invited to  try on anything.  Allegra Kuhl of Short Hills, who said she is a regular customer there, said,“It’s a great place to shop for fun shoes.” 

Another longtime Millburn favorite is La Strada Nuova.  On Millburn Avenue since 1979 it is now owned by Dario and Massimo DiPietro. In the warm weather, customers can enjoy the classic and fresh Italian fare outside on the beautiful patio.  The front room is casual and a place to enjoy their many varieties of  delicious pizza.  The back room has a more extensive menu and a restaurant feel.  Angie and her friend came from Maplewood on their lunch break because, “The pizza here is the best!”  She said they come to La Strada nuova all the time. 

Tucked away on Main Street is Bungalow, a clothing store that has developed a loyal following.  Owner Eve Golden said she wanted, “a downtown feel” for her unique boutique. Eve said she chose to locate her store in Millburn because, “women are really into fashion, here.”  Her shop offers unusual clothing, shoes and accessories at great prices, she said. Golden said that her store, “is more of a destination. If you want something stylish that is a little different from what you see everywhere else.”
