Teens Charged In Connection With Millburn Crimes Over 3 Months: Police

Four Essex County teens have been charged in connection with various crimes over 3 months in Millburn, police said Thursday.

MILLBURN, NJ — The Millburn police released an update on Thursday saying that four teens had been charged in connection with several crimes in Millburn in the first three months of 2023, including a purse-snatching and two car burglaries.

Police said that on Feb. 10, at 8:07 a.m., Millburn Police Officer Marone responded to Millburn Avenue near Locust Avenue on a report of theft from a person.

The victim reported that a man with dreadlocks and dark clothing approached her and stole her purse. When she told him to stop, he slapped her in the face and ran to a waiting vehicle, police said.

Detectives Royce and DeRosa later discovered that the vehicle was a 2021 Kia Sportage, stolen from Newark and recovered in East Orange.

Royce and DeRosa conducted a lengthy investigation.

This past March 14, 2023, police arrested Davante Andrews, 18, of Irvington, and Najaquan Baker, 19, of East Orange, in connection with the crime.

Andrews was charged with robbery, receiving stolen property, and three counts of forgery, police said. Baker was charged with receiving stolen property and forgery, police said.

Both men were taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility.

Two Stolen Cars

On Jan. 30, at 7:01 a.m., Millburn Police Officer Dalakian responded to a Merrywood Lane residence on a report of a suspicious parked vehicle. The investigation revealed that the grey 2020 Kia Sportage had been stolen from Newark. While watching the area, officers were alerted to another residence where two vehicles had been stolen. The investigation revealed that at 2:17 a.m., three people tried to enter vehicles, found them locked, and got into a residence through an open window.

Ultimately three people stole car keys from the residence, then took a 2021 Infiniti QX8 and a 2020 BMW 530.

Detectives Royce and DeRosa conducted a lengthy investigation.

They arrested Davante Andrews, 18, of Irvington, Najaquan Baker, 19, of East Orange, and a juvenile male, age 15, of Irvington, in connection with the crimes.

Andrews was charged with 13 total counts including burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and forgery. Baker was charged with 16 total counts of burglary and theft charges. The juvenile was charged with delinquency and released to a family member.

Hyundai Stolen

On March 3, 2023, at 4:14 a.m., Millburn Police Officer Crawn responded to Monterey Village Apartments on Millburn Avenue for a report of theft of a vehicle. The owner reported that their 2019 Hyundia SUV was stolen some time after 11:30 p.m. The vehicle was recovered in Newark.

Detectives Royce and DeRosa conducted a lengthy investigation, police said.

Ultimately, Davante Andrews, as well as Kashire Hayes, 18, of Newark, and a juvenile, 15, of Irvington, were charged. Andrews and Hayes were both charged with theft, conspiracy, and use of a juvenile. The juvenile was charged with delinquency and released to a family member.

Automobile Burglary

Andrews, Hayes, and a younger teen were also charged in connection with a burglary to an automobile on Walnut Avenue later that day.

Both Andrews and Hayes were taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility after they were charged with the crimes, police said. The juvenile was charged with delinquency and released to a family member.
