Hartshorn Honors Math Olympiad Participants

Itis a national math competition whose goal is to stimulate enthusiasm and a love for mathematics while introducing math concepts and strategies for problem-solving.

Hartshorn Elementary School honored its fourth and fifth grade Math Olympiad participants last Friday. Teacher and club sponsor Michele Orsini and Principal Ron Castaldo presented each student with a certificate of participation and awards the highest-scoring students in the group.

The Math Olympiad is a national math competition whose goal is to stimulate enthusiasm and a love for mathematics while introducing math concepts and strategies for problem-solving. Hartshorn's participants were recommended by their teachers.  They met twice a month from November through March to work on practice problems and the monthly contests of five questions worth one point each. Each correct answer earns a student one point with a maximum of 25 for the year.

According to Orsini, "A highlight of the program is having the opportunity to share problem-solving strategies and to understand that there are often many ways to attack a problem and  arrive at a correct answer."
