Hazmat Team Investigates 'White Powder' at Millburn Train Station

NJ Transit says no public health danger

A NJ Transit Hazmat team investigated a “white powder” that was found at the Millburn Train Station on Thursday morning, but reported that there is no public health danger.

After testing a white substance found on the floor of the train station bathroom around 7 a.m., an Emergency Services Unit declared the powder to be calcium carbonate, a “nonthreatening” compound commonly found in fire extinguishers, said NJ Transit Information Officer William Smith.

“As a precaution, the restroom and the waiting room of the station were evacuated,” Smith told Patch. “There is no danger to the public.”

When asked if a person may have been setting off a fire extinguisher in the bathroom – one commuter reported to Patch that “loud noises” were heard coming from the area that morning - Smith declined to comment, stating the incident was still under investigation.

The Millburn Police and Fire Departments deferred questions to NJ Transit, the investigating agency.
