Kindergarten Students Thank the Senior Readers at MCA

The Montessori Children's Academy - Short Hills - shared the 100th day of school celebration with local seniors.

To celebrate the 100th day of school, 153 children and 306 attentive ears listened to stories read by volunteers from the Millburn Senior Reading Program who were invited to The Montessori Children’s Academy (MCA) for this special occasion. Because the 100th day of school marks a milestone in the academic year for MCA’s Kindergarten class, the students wanted to share the celebration with the senior readers who have spent time reading with them throughout the school year. They also wanted to do something special for these valued community members.

An important component of the Kindergarten program at MCA is giving back to the community. Each year as the 100th day of school approaches, our students work on a project that involves 100 items to do just that. This year, after much thought, the children decided to write 100 notecards to say thank you to the senior readers for the enjoyment the children received with each story they were told.

When their guests arrived at the school, the Kindergarten class presented the volunteers with the thank you cards. But before allowing them to leave MCA, the children asked the senior readers a very important question: “Would you read us one more story?” On this last day of the Senior Reading Program for the 2015-2016 academic year, the readers happily stayed for a few extra stories, including The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert, and The Carrot Seed by Crockett Johnson.

Innovative programs such as the Senior Reading Program allow MCA to continue broadening its students’ connections with the community in which they live and learn. This program is also an excellent example of a key Montessori ideal in action – instilling and maintaining a lifelong love of learning.
