Millburn, NJ – Living near a beautiful, wooded area like the South Mountain Reservation has its perks, but it also has its drawbacks… such as the risks of wildfire.
That’s why the Millburn Fire Department is urging residents to be aware of wildfire risks as they enjoy the warming weather.
“Summer is a great time to cook out, relax and enjoy the outdoors, but it's important to be aware of risks,” said Millburn Fire Chief J. Michael Roberts. “We’re grateful for the cooperation of every resident in taking the steps necessary to protect our community and families.”

Locals can take specific steps to reduce their wildfire risk during the 2016 summer season, Roberts said:
- Keep cooking grills safely away from homes, structures, and wooded areas.
- Remember that no open burning is allowed in the township; residents using a Chiminea or fire bowl should burn only hard wood, as with an indoor fireplace.
- Never burn trash or yard waste.
- Avoid leaving a fire unattended, and have a garden hose at the ready to extinguish the fire when needed.
- Trim and maintain brush and trees, and avoid storing dead wood or dry brush.
- If you have a home fireplace, have a spark arrestor installed at the top of the chimney to keep sparks from falling into gutters or brush around the property.
