Forbes analyzed the fortunes of the country’s richest people to identify each state’s wealthiest person. This is the magazine’s fifth edition of the list.
Despite what you heard, not every billionaire is fleeing New Jersey. Indeed, this man is worth $6.1 billion, according to Forbes.
New Jersey's richest resident is John Overdeck, the cofounder of Two Sigma Investments, a data-driven hedge fund that manages $57 billion in assets.

The Millburn resident's company absorbs large amounts of information to predict the prices of securities, according to Forbes. Two Sigma also runs a market-making business, owns a Bermuda reinsurance company and operates a venture capital arm.
Overdeck, a Stanford University graduate who turns 50 this year, has given $145 million to his charitable foundation, tax filings show. Forbes says the foundation supports children's education programs.

Overdeck is originally from Maryland but his wife, Laura, whom he married in 2002, came from the Westfield-based family.
The net worth of the individuals on the Forbes list, meanwhile, varies. For example, Washington is home to the world’s two richest and most recognizable billionaires; Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates, but in certain states, the richest people only had a nine-figure net worth, Forbes writes.

Collectively, the wealthy on the Forbes list had a net worth of $875 billion, which the magazine says set a new record.

- Mark Zuckerberg: $71 billion (California)
- Michael Bloomberg: $53.8 billion (New York)

- Alice Walton: $50.1 billion (Texas)
- Charles Koch: $42 billion (Kansas)
- Sheldon Adelson: $35.7 billion (Nevada)
- Phil Knight & family: $35 billion (Oregon)
- Jacqueline Mars: $28.1 billion (Virginia)
- John Mars: $28.1 billion (Wyoming)
