Millburn Boys Tennis Shines in Season Opener

The high school's new lineup produced a winning result against Montclair High School.

Fresh off a three-day training trip to upstate New York, Millburn High School's newly reconstituted state championship boys' tennis team made a successful debut against Montclair High School on Wednesday, winning all five matches.

Last June's graduation depleted the team of four of its seven starters, but Coach Bill Wickenheisser maintains a deep talent pool from which to select his three singles and two doubles teams.

Returning at first singles, sophomore Tyler Schick scored the first win against Montclair, defeating Jackson Claudio 6-1, 6-0.

The next team point came courtesy of senior Andrew Nolff and junior Evan Imegwu, making their first appearance both as starters and as a first doubles team. They beat Will Wallace and Ryan Kautz of Montclair 6-1, 6-1.

Moving up a slot to second singles, Senior co-captain Dean Koman dispatched Julien Naegeli 6-1, 6-3, to score the third and decisive team point.

Senior co-captain Teddy Moskovitz, leapfrogging from his 2011-2012 post at second doubles, won his starting third-singles outing at 6-2, 6-2, against Leo Hentschker.

The final Millburn point was scored by the new second doubles team, senior Josh Landau and junior Jon Duan, who battled back from a 2-6 first- set loss to take the next two sets 7-6(4) and 6-4.

The boys' next contest is Friday at James Caldwell High School.
