MHS Named Top High School in the State

New Jersey Monthly Magazine says Millburn is No. 1 in NJ.

New Jersey Monthly Magazine has ranked Millburn High School the top high school in the state for the second time in a row. In a poll to be released in the September issue, MHS beat out 321 schools. The rankings are completed biannually - Millburn also received top honors in 2008.

"To be ranked number one twice in a row is truly an amazing accomplishment, and all of Millburn has much to celebrate when it comes to our schools," says Superintendent Dr. James Crisfield.

This is the first time a school has claimed the top spot in back-to-back rankings.

Crisfield went on to say that the achievement is a testament to all teachers in the school district, not solely at the high school.

"The high school years cap an amazing 13-year journey through the Millburn school system, and teachers all along the way deserve the community's recognition and gratitude for instilling in Millburn's students a love of learning."

Student performance on standardized tests, the number of students who attend college, school environment were all factors in the decision. The average SAT score at MHS is 1868.

"The success of the student body as a whole speaks for itself, but more importantly, we could not be more proud of our students as individuals and how they each commit themselves to their own academic pursuits in their own individual ways," added Crisfield. "Academic excellence is something people in this community have come to expect, and it is gratifying to know that their schools can deliver."

The superintendent emphasized that in shaping its vision, his administration will strive to maintain the level of academic excellence that has helped Millburn gain such a quality reputation. It will also emphasize character education and focus on how students in the schools can become better citizens.

"I sense that we all, as a community, do care about things like citizenship and trustworthiness and responsibility," he said.

The rankings are compiled by the Polling Institute of Monmouth University using data reported to the Department of Education by each school.

The full list will be available on the NJ Monthly website starting August 23rd. The Top 100 will be published in the September issue, which will hit newsstands on August 31st, featuring a photo of MHS senior Sheridan Schechner.
