MHS Tennis Falls to Newark Academy

After besting the Minutemen at Counties, Millers yield in regular conference play.

The Newark Academy Minutemen handed the visiting Millburn varsity tennis team a rude welcome Tuesday, winning four courts to one in a regular conference match.

In their lone previous meeting, on April 16 at the Essex County Tennis Tournament semifinals, the Millers had prevailed, shutting out the Livingston private school 5-0.

But this time it was not to be. Millburn’s first doubles duo, Mac Johnson and Jared Wishnow, started the team off on the right note, dusting off Reid Schalet and Adam Hyatt 6-3, 6-2. From then on it was downhill.

Newark Academy’s first singles Dan Eatroff scored the first point for the Minutemen, defeating Rob Xie 6-2, 6-3.  Om Pathak and Neil Sethi, at second doubles, notched the second Minuteman point, defeating Nicky Chen-Schmidt and Dean Koman 6-3, 7-5.

Andre Rivera, at third singles, clinched the match for Newark Academy with a three-set win over Miller Alex Shipp 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.  The final point went to Rivera’s teammate Logan Erickson, who bested Tristan Lane at second singles, 6-1, 7-6(3).

In earlier action this week, on Monday, the Millburn team drubbed West Essex Regional High School, 5-0. The Millers’ overall record now stands at 11-3, with their Super Essex Conference (American Division) record at 6-1.
