Millburn 5th Graders Compete In ‘National Geographic Bee’
The school bee was the first round of the National Geographic Society's 30th annual contest.

Washington School fifth graders recently participated in the school-level competition of the “National Geographic Bee”. The school bee was the first round of the National Geographic Society’s 30th annual contest, a nationwide geography competition for 4th through 8th graders, designed to inspire and reward student’s curiosity about the world.
On Tuesday, January 9, ten fifth graders with the top scores from the school’s preliminary round competed in the Washington School finals. Students answered questions about U.S. and world geography, including map-reading and landmarks.

Congratulations to fifth grader, Nicole Xie for winning the school title. Fifth graders, Cooper Hazday and Matthew Herbert placed second and third respectively. Nicole, as the school champion, will now complete a qualifying test for a chance to compete in the New Jersey’s state-level competition in April. State winners will advance to the national championship in Washington D.C. in May for a chance to win a $50,000 college scholarship and other prizes.
Washington fifth graders also participated in the school level competition of the “Scripps National Spelling Bee”. This contest is designed to motivate students to learn about spelling and the origin of words.

On Thursday, January 11, twenty fifth graders with the top scores from the school’s preliminary round competed in Washington School Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Aviva Winnick and Richa Kamasamudam who placed first and second respectively. The school champion will be eligible to participate in the National Championship that takes place in Washington D.C. in May.
