Millburn Boys Tennis Wins Section Title

With a 4-1 defeat of Ridge, the Millers advance to the Group 4 semifinals.

Millburn High's boys varsity tennis team has continued its post-season run with a series of hard-fought wins. Last Thursday, the Millers beat a determined Westfield High team in the NJSIAA North 2 section semifinal. On Monday they defeated a tough Ridge High School in the section finals to win a berth in the Group 4 semifinal competition at Mercer County Park on Wednesday.

The section final against Ridge -- which brought with it an 18-2 record --was played indoors at Brooklake Country Club in Florham Park. In that match, Millburn's first doubles team of Andrew Nolff and Evan Imegwu scored the first team point, quickly dispatching Ridge's Ryan Weinerman and Kevin Yan, 6-1, 6-2.

Miller second singles Dean Koman notched the second team point by beating Rahul Hingorani in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

The match was clinched by Millburn's first doubles duo, Teddy Moskovitz and Keith Knopp, who recovered from a 6-4 first-set loss to Eric Zhang and Stephen Chung to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-1.

With the score now 3-0 for Millburn and the match won, the two teams' coaches agreed to stop the ongoing first and third singles matches, which both were tied at one set all.

In those contests, Miller first singles Tyler Schick took his first set against Michael Liu of Ridge 6-2, but lost the second 6-4. Third singles Jonathan Duan had lost his first set 7-5 to Mason Keel but won the second 6-1. Each school earned half a point for each court.

The final match score was Millburn 4, Ridge 1. Millburn's record this season stands at 25-1.

The semifinals of the groups competition scheduled for Wednesday pits Millburn against its conference rival Livingston High School. In their three previous meetings this season, two in regular conference play and one at the Newark Academy Invitational Tournament, the Millers have triumphed over the Lancers. Game time Wednesday is set for 11 a.m.
