Millburn FD Battles Mulch Fire At Compost Facility

Millburn Fire Chief: The blaze involved a large construction machine that contains 400 gallons of diesel fuel and a pile of wood chips.

MILLBURN, NJ — Millburn firefighters battled a mulch fire at a compost facility on Brookside Drive on Tuesday afternoon. The blaze involved a large construction machine that contains 400 gallons of diesel fuel, authorities said.

Millburn Fire Chief Robert Echavarria told Patch that crews arrived at 280 Brookside Drive shortly after 12:12 p.m. and saw a heavy smoke condition in the air. Firefighters soon discovered that the blaze involved a diesel-powered piece of construction machinery and a pile of wood chips, although it was not immediately clear what caused the fire.

As of 2:15 p.m., the fire was still burning but there was little chance of it spreading unless the wind picks up, Echavarria said.
