Millburn Fire Department Earns Coveted Insurance Rating

Less than 4 percent of fire departments nationwide earn a Class 3 rating from the ISO, the Millburn Fire Department said.

MILLBURN, NJ — The Millburn Fire Department recently earned a Class 3 rating by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The designation, which is earned by fewer than 4 percent of fire departments nationwide, is presented to agencies that show an exceptional level of preparedness and overall effectiveness.

According to the Millburn Fire Department, insurance carriers - including those that cover homes and businesses - make decisions about insurance coverage and premiums based on several factors, including ISO ratings. A more desirable ISO rating indicates a higher level of protection for a community, which means that insurance rates are more favorable — a benefit to homeowners and business owners in Millburn and Short Hills.

The MFD shared some details about how tricky earning a good ISO rating can be:

“To achieve its Class 3 rating, the Fire Department was subjected to a Public Protection Classification (PPC) survey. The survey covered a wide variety of areas, including emergency communications, local water supply, and firefighter equipment and training. ISO's surveyors determined that the Millburn Fire Department has the capacity to suppress any fire in any building in the community, that its training programs considerably exceed minimum standards, and that it operates a reliable and appropriately staffed 24-hour dispatch center. The surveyors also determined that the township's infrastructure, including its pressurized water supply, meets all necessary standards.”

"We are proud to receive this coveted rating, and pleased that it will benefit the hardworking taxpayers who call our community home," Millburn Fire Chief Robert Echavarria said. "We hope it gives our residents peace of mind to know that their safety is our top priority, every hour of the day."
