Millburn Given Report Card In New Ranking

How did the community do? Check out the best, worst places to live on a NJ 'report card.'

MILLBURN, NJ - Millburn was given a report card you should be paying attention to as Niche has come out with its new 2019 rankings of the "Best Places to Live" in New Jersey. But for at least the third year in row, it took a bit of a unique approach: The consumer rankings service assigned a grade, on an A+-to-D- scale, to almost every town in the state.

Sixty communities received A+ grades, topped with towns such as Princeton, Edison and Fanwood.

Nine communities received D+ grades or lower grades, including Bridgeton, the Brookfield section of White Township and the Port Norris section of Commercial Township in Cumberland County. The list included sections of towns and city neighborhoods.

Millburn earned an A+ ranking.

To arrive at the rankings, Niche.com took several factors into consideration, such as:

  • Cost of Living Grade: Based on the consumer price index and access to affordable housing.
  • Higher Education Rate: Percentage of residents who have received a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Housing Grade: Based on home values, property taxes, housing costs, local schools, and more.
  • Public Schools: Grade: Based on the average Niche K-12 Overall Grade for every public school serving the area, where each school is weighted by the number of students it serves.
  • Diversity Grade: Based on ethnic, generational and economic diversity.
  • Composite Overall: Score Niche survey responses scored on a 1-5 scale regarding the overall experience of the place.
  • Crime & Safety Grade: Based on violent and property crime rates.
  • Family Grade: Based on school quality, safety, and family-friendly living.
  • Health & Fitness Grade: Based on community health statistics and access to healthcare.
  • Jobs Grade: Based on employment rates, job and economic growth, and cost of living.
  • Nightlife Grade: Based on access to bars, restaurants, theaters, and other attractions.
  • Outdoor Activities Grade: Based on weather, air quality, and access to parks and other recreational opportunities.
  • Walkability Grade: Based on the proportion of residents that walk or bike, as well as the proximity of amenities and the density of development.
  • Weather Grade: Based on the number of sunny days, precipitation, and average temperatures in an area.
  • Shortest Commute Grade: Based on typical commute times and methods.

Niche created a standardized score for each factor, and after weighting each factor, an overall score was calculated, which was again given a new standardized score.
