In Millburn: Internet Outage Cancels PARCC Exam

Power short to blame; Testing rescheduled to Wednesday

Students in the Millburn district encountered an unexpected glitch with their PARCC exams on Monday, when a district-wide Internet outage forced postponement of testing in the elementary and middle schools.

According to a letter sent from the Millburn superintendent to parents and guardians, all testing schedules will be pushed back to Wednesday. There is no PARCC testing scheduled for Tuesday, as it is an early dismissal day for staff development.

The letter stated that a power outage on Sunday night caused an air conditioner that cools the district’s server room to fail. The server room subsequently overheated and shut down all connectivity.

According to school officials, the district’s Internet capabilities were restored late Monday afternoon.

“We are determining why the back up systems failed to alert us… We are working with personnel from the district’s Technology and Buildings and Grounds departments to ensure that we have all the fail-safe measures in place to prevent a similar situation from happening again… This was a learning opportunity for all of us,” stated the letter.
