Millburn Newlyweds Share Finance Tips

The cliché of newlyweds fighting over money exists for a reason… it’s usually true.

As any recently married couple knows, combining finances can be a Sisyphean effort. But one Millburn couple recently shared some tips that they’ve learned with Time Magazine.

Hint… it involves “audits.”

According to Avik and Shailja Chopra, some of their early financial conflicts included disagreements over each other’s spending priorities: Avik wanted to eat lunch with his co-workers, and Shailja wanted to purchase cleaning products to keep a tidy home.

Time reported:

“The Millburn, N.J., couple picks one month and records every single dollar each of them spends. At the end of the month, they review their total joint spending together… The system of auditing has spared them a lot of conflict over the years.”
