Millburn-Short Hills Weather Watch: Above Freezing Monday, Possible Snow by Tuesday Afternoon

Winter Storm Sparta affects traffic and travel across state; Minor power outages reported in Essex and Hudson Counties

Residents in the Essex and Hudson County area who woke up to messy commutes on Monday morning may find solace in the National Weather Service’s prediction of above-freezing temperatures for the rest of the day.

However, this sunny outlook may take a turn for the worse on Tuesday, as the NWS is forecasting possible snow by late afternoon for the area.

According to the NWS, Essex County received between 3.3 and 4.5 inches of snowfall on Sunday night. Hudson County received between 3.4 and 4 inches.

On Monday, PSE&G reported minor power outages in Essex and Hudson Counties on its website, affecting less than five customers in each county.

As of Monday morning, there were no active watches, warnings or advisories for New Jersey, according to the NWS.

On its website, the NWS Regional Weather Summary forecasted “northwesterly winds and a breezy afternoon” for Monday.

“Increasing amounts of sun will allow some areas, particularly across the city and along the coasts, to warm above freezing today. Temperatures will drop into the single digits and teens however, tonight, as average temperatures remain well below normal.”

The NWS stated that “an approaching warm front will bring increasing clouds on Tuesday, with snow developing from southwest to northeast by late in the afternoon. Daytime temperatures will be as much as 15 degrees below average.”

Commuters and travelers faced significant hurdles on Monday, including several vehicle crashes throughout the state, delays at Philadelphia International Airport and Newark International Airport, and a 45-mph restriction on the Garden State Parkway. [See related story]

On Monday, the New Jersey State Police stated on their Twitter page that “secondary roads are still covered,” and that a “layer of ice on the trees is a guarantee of a rough commute.
