Millburn Storm Update: Downed Wires, Power Outages, Closed Roads

"There is no restoration timeline on power," Millburn town officials said Thursday morning.

MILLBURN, NJ — Millburn suffered downed wires, power outages and snow-laden roadways after a Wednesday storm wreaked havoc throughout the area.

The Millburn Township Office of Emergency Management released the following storm update on Thursday morning:

“The Township experienced a significant snow event yesterday afternoon and evening. There are numerous downed trees, power lines and road closures throughout the Township due to the weight of the snow fall. There are approximately 3,700 customers without power in the Township and we are awaiting response from JCP&L to make safe numerous live wires that have been felled by the storm.”

  • If you want to report a non-emergency issue call (973) 564-7000. Town Hall staff will be answering calls to keep a running list for investigation by our personnel or dispatching issues that need to be addressed by JCP&L.
  • There is no restoration timeline on power. We will communicate any information that we receive from JCP&L
  • With the nicer weather [Thursday] it will be tempting to walk around. There are still numerous dangerous conditions with downed wires. Always assume wires are electric and live. Wires may be hidden. Please accompany children and pets if you must go out.
  • Please stay off the roads if possible. Many roads are still impassable and dangerous.
  • The Library will be open at 9:30 am for a place to charge up/warm up. The Mall at Short Hills will open at noon
  • Senior programs have been cancelled. Trash collection is suspended and will resume normal schedule tomorrow unless updated otherwise
  • A list of road closures, issues reported and other pertinent information will be posted to the Township website.

According to an earlier Millburn advisory, the township has a running list of calls for service. Residents can call 973-564-7035 to report issues. Power outages and downed wires should be reported to JCP&L at 1-888-544-4877 as well.

The Millburn Public School District closed schools on Thursday due to “safety issues as a result of the number of downed wires, trees and road closures in town and around the state.”

Millburn wasn’t the only Essex County town hit hard by the storm. Flights were canceled in Newark, roads became impassable in Verona and Cedar Grove, downed power lines were seen in Maplewood and Livingston and trees were down in Montclair.
