Millburn Students Find Success In Geography Bee

MILLBURN, NJ - Students from four Millburn schools participated in this year’s National Geographic GeoBee competition during the month of January attempting to qualify for the state and national GeoBee competitions.

Students at Hartshorn, Wyoming, Washington and Millburn Middle Schools participated in the qualifiers.

Students were asked to respond aloud to questions about U.S. and world geography, including map-reading/interpretation and landmarks. Championship round questions required simultaneous written responses.

Wyoming Elementary School fourth grader Ryan Wang qualified to move on to the New Jersey State Championships being held on March 29 at Rowan University in Glassboro. Students will be competing for a top prize of $1,000 cash and a trip to Washington, D.C., for the National Championship.

At Wyoming School’s GeoBee qualifiers, Ryan Wang took first place, and Ella Trautner and Poppy Meiler were runners up. Other 4th graders who participated were: Liam Palma, Yana Novak, Rishi Raina, Ashna Swaroop, Marcello Carlucci, and Shriya Iyer.

At Hartshorn School this was the fifth year students took part in this nationwide contest, sponsored by the National Geographic Society, that is open to students in grades 4-8. Ten fourth graders with the top scores from the school’s preliminary round competed in the Hartshorn School finals. Fourth grader, Raghav Hariharan, who, in an intense 6-question championship round with Ryan Hoh, correctly answered a tie-breaking question, to secure the school title. Fourth graders Ryan Hoh and Chase Redler placed second and third respectively.

At Washington School, 10 Fifth Grade students competed in the GeoBee, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place going to Kedaar Shankarnarayan, Joey Deng and Ishaan Bharadwaj, respectively. The other 5th grade finalists are: Jose Landauro, Alexander Mischel, Aadit Shrivastava, Kaitlyn Mai, Jake Parker, Jonah Ladetsky and Sanjana Srivastava

Millburn Middle School had 11 students who qualified through classroom tournaments to participate in the school finals. The finalists were: Matthew Dooley, Tea Datson, Liam Robins, Tyler Baron, Ben Brett, Henry Sun, Audrey Shin, Matthew Herbert, Jake Roesler, Nicole Xie, and Naina Grover

The National Geographic GeoBee is an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Students in grades four through eight (4-8) from nearly 10,000 schools across the United States will compete in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic GeoBee Champion.
