Millburn Voters Prep For $25M School Referendum

Should Millburn taxpayers fork out more than $25 million to fund school improvement projects? Voters head to the polls on Sept. 27.

MILLBURN, NJ — Should Millburn taxpayers fork out more than $25 million to fund a project that would purchase and renovate the former Millburn Regional Day School?

That’s the question that will be answered on Sept. 27 when the township and the Millburn Board of Education hold a voter referendum to ask local voters to authorize the district to raise $25,593,176 via bonds for the project, which would turn the former day school into a 5th grade facility.

The referendum would also fund the renovation of media centers at the district’s elementary schools, as well as pay for additions and renovations at the Millburn Middle and High School, administrators said.

“The state has determined that it will provide debt service aid in the amount of $7,618,199 on the proposed referendum projects,” Millburn BOE members stated on a website promoting the referendum. “That brings the net cost of the proposed referendum to $17,974,977 from the total cost of $25,593,176.”

“This program of building improvements has a positive impact at each grade level, will protect our school investments, insure our high academic standing for years to come and will alleviate overcrowding and/or the need for redistricting in the very near future,” school administrators posit on the website.
