MMS Team in Finals of Academically Speaking

The sixth graders will compete against Nutley for the county championship.

Millburn's sixth grade team is a finalists in the Essex County Academically Speaking Tournament.

Academically Speaking is a contest run by the Essex County Gifted and Talented Steering Committee.  In this Jeopardy-like tournament, students answer questions in five rounds on a variety of topics including math, science, geography, sports, arts, grammar and literature and current events.  Using buzzers and answering at lightning speeds, students gain and lose points as they answer individually and in team rounds.

Millburn's team of sixth graders from Millburn Middle School had to win in their three previous matches, including on May 5 against Mt. Pleasant School in Livingston, to get to the finals.  Finals against Nutley will be held on Wednesday, May 26 in the Bloomfield Middle School at 5:30 p.m. The finals are open to the public.

Millburn's Team started as an after school club at the middle school.  The Millburn students had Carol Hyde of the Essex County Steering Committee, and a gifted and talented teacher in West Orange, visit to help them prepare. This is the first time Millburn students have participated in the annual competition.
