MSHLAX Fifth Grade Recap Westfield and Cranford Tournament
The 5th Graders on the MSHLAX team logged in several hours of lacrosse this weekend- and to much success.
On Friday (5/17/19) evening the Millers traveled to take on the Westfield Blue Devils and came away with a solid 8-2 win to bring their record to 10-5.
The Millburn midfielders dominated the game with a combined six face offs won and, what Coach Justice described as a “triumvirate” of middies, rang in five of the eight goals- a hat trick by Luke Greenseid, two from Henry Foster and a lone goal by middie Jack Gukassey.
Getting a little bit of a break due to their hustling middies, attack was able to control the ball with long possessions and passing sequences, two goals by Luke Betlow and Bruno Pastore, as well as Reese Solomon’s efforts sprinting to gain possession after a remarkable 34 shots on goal.
The young laxers were able to run through newly developed plays and continue to learn and grow as a team as they dominated throughout the match.
“In each game we tend to shine and be successful by virtue of one position that carries the game,” Coach Justice commented. “We’re working on transitions, defensive communication and set offense as the boys continue to build their skills and lacrosse IQ.”
The Miller defense, which was able to slow the Blue Devils by causing turnovers and implementing solid man to man coverage, was led by Miles Welner, JP Maggio, Wes Dieckman, Wade Schmell and long stick middie Jack Smith.
Posner held his own in goal during three quarters, stopping 6 of 8 shots, and was relieved by Max Ventura who suited up for the first time this season stopping 2 out of 2 shots on goal.

The Millers completed their weekend in the blazing sun during the early afternoon hours at the Cranford Tournament on Sunday (5/19). Tying New Providence 6-6, in an attempt to redeem themselves from their first away loss of the season, the Millers had little trouble dominating their following two games against tournament host Cranford 9-2 and Watchung Hills 10-2. All team members contributed to the success of the tournament with solid performances by newcomers Roinn Peterson, Timothy Chinchilla, Jordan Roth, Matthew Vegman and returning players Jake Frohlich, Daniel Marx, and Zev Fine.
The Millers take on two challenging teams this week today (Tuesday) at 5:30 at home against rival Chatham and away on Wednesday at Montclair at 7:30.
