School Strategic Plan Discussion Begins
5-year plan would enhance collaboration, culture, character education and the common core, Assistant Superintendent Christine Burton said.

The Millburn Schools Board of Education heard the first report on the district's new five-year strategic plan, which focuses on citizenship development and cultural appreciation at a Monday night meeting that drew more than 200 residents and school staffers, The Alternative Press reported.
Assistant Superintendent of Schools Christine Burton explained that a major part of the plan was to "foster a collaborative culture that promotes engaged citizenship through academics, co-curricular activities, service, and effective communication throughout the school community,” the article said.

- Instituting a districtwide character education program
- Helping students, staff and parents how to best use of social media and mobile technology
- Promoting cultural diversity through cultural experiences and events, community service and cross-curricular service learning.
Burton said the plan, which would prepare young people in all fundamental subject areas, was designed to get students to meet and exceed state core curriculum standards. She added that the community service component is not mandatory.
