Short Hills 4th Grader Competes In Iconic Spelling Bee

How do you spell s-m-a-r-t? Ask Tanay Nandan of Short Hills, who made his first appearance at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

SHORT HILLS, NJ — How did 10-year-old Tanay Nandan prepare for his first foray into the most prestigious youth spelling bee in the nation? He read… a lot.

Although the Short Hills resident and Hartshorn Elementary School 4th grader wasn’t among the 40 finalists in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee (he placed 41st), Nandan’s selection to the contest made his hometown proud.

According to his profile on the competition’s website:

“Tanay is an avid reader and will read whatever he can lay his eyes upon. He also plays many sports, but his favorites are soccer and tennis. When Tanay isn't reading or at an activity, he codes on Scratch. He wants to be a professional coder and code new things for Google. During school break, when he is not traveling and has lots of time, he watches his favorite shows on TV, such as MythBusters, Tanked and Outrageous Acts of Science. Tanay will be going to the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the first time, and he hopes to immerse himself in the experience and learn from his fellow participants.”
