St. Rose of Lima Academy Wins

Junior Solar Sprint

This year, St. Rose of Lima Academy had three solar car teams. Students spent two lunch and recess periods a week with Art teacher and coach, Mrs Tyler, to research solar power and energy and to design cars to compete in the JSS (Junior Solar Sprint) competition. On May 16th, the teams attended a regional competition at New Providence middle school. There were over 60 teams competing in the categories for Engineering, Craftsmanship, Best Use of Recycled Materials, Student Choice Award, Progress Journal, and Speed. The SRLA teams swept both categories of Students Choice and Upcycled Materials. Our 6th grade team also won first place for Craftsmanship with the 8th grade team taking a close second.

The three teams were invited to the Inter-County Finals on May 20th in Morristown. At finals, the 6th grade team from St Rose won 2nd place for Students Choice with the Infinity Gauntlet, while the 8th grade team won 1st place for Upcycled Materials. This group wowed the judges with their creative design of a Pinball Machine Solar Car.

Congratulations to all of our teams who worked so hard all year on their designs and their cars.
