Steinbeck Classic Inspires Millburn Students To Do Good Deed

After reading "Of Mice and Men," Millburn Middle School 8th graders wanted to do something to help "those forgotten by society."

MILLBURN, NJ — After recently reading John Steinbeck’s classic book, “Of Mice and Men,” Millburn Middle School 8th graders in Mary D’Alessio and Melissa Batista’s English classes wanted to do something to help “those forgotten by society,” just like in the novel.

So this is what they decided to do, according to their teachers:

“Students researched the importance of early education, and learned how it enhances the trajectory of a child’s life. They decided to hold a week-long fundraiser to make a donation to PreSchool Advantage, a Morristown-based organization that provides preschool tuition to families who are unable to afford quality preschool education. They created a photo board with preschool student photos that represented the funds they raised that enabled them to present a check for of $2,500 to Preschool Advantage Executive Director Molly Dunn.”

In addition, 8th Grade student Maddy Bryant wrote an article, “Students Standing for Students,” about the project for the Millburn Middle School student news site, “The Penpoint.”
