Supermarkets In Millburn And Nearby Offer Senior Shopping Hours

The time allows seniors to partake of stocked shelves without worrying about crowds. Some stores also offer a free taxi home or delivery.

MILLBURN, NJ — Supermarkets throughout Essex County, including in Millburn, are offering special hours for senior citizens to shop. This allows them to access stocked shelves without worrying about crowds, to maintain social distancing amid the spread of coronavirus.

The supermarkets include the Millburn ShopRite and others.

In addition, Maplewood and South Orange have listed special hours for several of their markets: Stop & Shop on Valley Street, 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.; Kings (for seniors and “high risk guests”) from 7-8 a.m.; Extra Supermarket on Irvington Avenue, 6-7:30 a.m. for seniors only (they also offer a free taxi service for seniors to get home with their purchases). Ashley Market in South Orange Village is not doing senior hours but takes orders by phone and does free delivery: (973) 762-5200 x1.

Coronavirus updates

On Wednesday, Gov. Phil Murphy said the New Jersey death toll from coronavirus had climbed to 62.

Residents who have questions about the virus can call 211 or contact the State of New Jersey's hotline at 1 (800) 222-1222.

Experts say that the novel coronavirus, because it's new, is more lethal and much harder to treat than the flu.

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that include the common cold as well as much more serious diseases. The strain that emerged in China in late 2019, now called COVID-19, is related to others that have caused serious outbreaks in recent years, including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the U.S. was on Jan. 21.
