The Weekender: Celebrating 'Hairspray'

What's going on in and around town this weekend.

The weather is getting cooler, but it's still warm enough to enjoy outdoor weekend activities.

On Sunday at  1-5 p.m., the Paper Mill Playhouse will host a free event in downtown Millburn to celebrate the opening of "Hairspray." The event features rides and games for all ages, contests, giveaways, food and live entertainment from the girl group tribute band The Fantastic Party Dolls Show and Dance Band. There will be appearances by the cast of "Hairspray," which runs from Sept. 22 through Oct. 24 at Paper Mill.

On Saturday New Eyes for the Needy will host its first Fabulous Finds showroom event of the fall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Silver, crystal, giftware and unique jewelry will be available for sale thanks to generous donations the organization received over the summer.

All ages are welcome on Sunday at the South Mountain Reservation from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The group will remove invasive plants and plant noninvasive ones. Be sure to wear long pants.  Meet at the at the dog park parking lot off of Crest Drive.

Join the South Orange Maplewood Bicycle Coalition on Sunday for a five-mile ride. The group will meet at 10 a.m. at the NJ Transit Parking Lot at Maplewood Avenue and Baker Street in Maplewood.
