The Weekender: Comedy and Music

Catch comedy to support a local cause and listen to some music in and around Millburn-Short Hills.

Essex County CASA will hold a comedy night on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Community Congregational Church on Hartshorn Drive. Three comics will perform and there will be refreshments for $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Proceeds benefit Essex County CASA, a non profit organization that trains volunteers to advocate on behalf of foster children. For information, call 973-693-6785 or visit www.casaessex.org.

If you're interested in music, on Friday night at 8-11 p.m. Highland Place in Maplewood will host Rock the House, a night filled with live music. Featured will be: Keith Monacchio, a singer/songwriter, FELT, a local band, and a Led Zeppelin tribute band. There will be a $5 cover charge and food and drink will be available for purchase.

Catch some comedy at SOPAC with Carrie Fisher's Wishful Drinking. Fisher, the daughter of Eddie Fischer and Debbie Reynolds, starred as Princess Leia in the Star Wars movies and will discuss her life in and out of the spotlight. Performances are at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and there is also a performance at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Prices on tickets range from $65 to $85 and can be purcahsed here.

Couldn't get enough of SOPAC? On Sunday at 7 p.m. singer-songwriter Marc Broussard will be performing his signature soul music. Songs will span from his earlier material to his most recent album, "Keep Coming Back." He also will be joined by Julian Velard as his opening act. Tickets range from $38 to $48 and can be purchased here.

Take advantage of the summer and bring the whole family on a bike ride. This weekend the South Orange Maplewood Bicycle Coalition will host a family bike ride at 11 a.m. Sunday. The ride will be through the Loantaka Brook Reservation. Participants should meet in the parking lot on Loantaka Way (by the ending of Shunpike Rood). Make sure to bring water. Go: Organic Percussion will be performing at Shakti Yoga in Maplewood Saturday at 8 p.m. The performance is in homage to the summer solstice and the group will be performing music to celebrate. All proceeds from this will be used to pay off debt that the studio incurred from a fire. A donation of $20 is suggested.
