A total of about 1,600 students from almost 100 high schools in New Jersey competed in the Merck State Science Day academic competition, which gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of science.  Participating students take a test in biology, chemistry, physics, integrated science or advanced integrated science. Integrated science competitors are usually sophomores and juniors. Students taking the other tests are usually juniors and seniors.  MISE and NJSTA gave awards to the four highest scoring students on each test.

"MISE is delighted to honor the state's top student achievers," said Carlo Parravano, executive director of MISE, in a press release.  "The success of these students is a testament to the long-term commitment of Merck to improve science education in New Jersey and Pennsylvania through the support of programs at the graduate, undergraduate and pre-college levels."
