Top Summer Swimmers Compete in Meet of Champions

The top swimmers from 19 towns converged on New Providence Thursday for the New Jersey Summer Swim League Meet of Champions.

These swimmers ages 7 to 18, were from four separate divisions each with five teams and had competed in their own Divisional Meets on Monday to get here -- those with the fastest times across all of those meets made it to the championship meet.

Millburn sent about 25 swimmers to the meet this year, said Coach Kelly Fitzmaurice.

“We did really well this season,” she said. “And they had a good meet today.”

The Meet of Champions was hosted by the New Providence Piranhas at the team’s facility which has two pools with lap lanes – one for warming up while other races are going on.

It's a meet for individual swimmers, not for teams. Swimmers compete against each other and against their own personal best times.

But, for fun – and something the teams love – officials tally up all the points scored by the individuals and rank the teams accordingly.

This year, Millburn ranked 15^th overall and the boys team ranked 9^th while the girls team ranked 18^th.

The highlights for Millburn were two first place finishes by 17-year-old Benjamin Lin and a 3^rd place finish for the 12 & Under Boys 100-meter Freestyle Relay team and an 8th place finish by a team of 9-year-olds that competed against 12-, 11- and 10-year-olds.
