Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Remembered
Library hosts speaker to honor 100th Anniversary of fire that killed 146 in NYC and shaped labor policy.
Last week marked the 100th Anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in Lower Manahattan that killed 146 garment workers, most of whom were young immigrant women.
To mark the anniversary, on Tuesday the Millburn Free Public Library will host guest speaker Abbott Gorin, an attorney who lives in Millburn, to discuss the fire, it's aftermath and the changes it brought about through labor reform.
The fire raced quickly through the eighth floor of the building in the late afternoon of March 25, 1911, and the workers who were locked in the 9th floor had no way of escape. Many jumped to their deaths. Gorin, who also spoke about the fire at the Springfield libary, told the New Jersey Jewish News that he has been interested in the fire since he was in middle school and his grandmother told him about the funerals and was forever haunted by the funeral dirge.
