Unicycling Keeps Millburn Girl Busy During Self-Isolation
A unique hobby keeps her busy during the coronavirus pandemic.
MILLBURN, NJ — With in-person school now canceled until at least September, and families self-isolating to protect themselves from the coronavirus pandemic, kids are finding ways to get exercise and keep busy. One pre-teen has found a balance by continuing a unique hobby.
Maeve Ryan, 12, is a seventh grader at Millburn Middle School. She asked for a unicycle two years ago, even though she didn't know anyone else who had one.
"I ordered it on Amazon and she practiced everyday for three weeks to learn to ride," said her father, Jamie Ryan. "For Christmas this year, she wanted a taller one. It’s called a Giraffe Unicycle. Since Christmas she has been practicing and is now able to ride around our neighborhood (supervised)!"

Jamie added, "Self isolation has been not easy, but she and her brother Liam have been creative in playing together. Liam is 14 and has helped Maeve learn how to play basketball while on the unicycle. They make a great team together."
Jamie coaches Maeve's recreational basketball team.

"Maeve is an extremely positive teen with a caring heart and fun spirit," said Jamie, who described himself as a proud father.
