What Babies Learn in the Womb

Mothers may instinctively know to read to their babies in utero, but may not be fully aware of the ways babies learn and hear in the womb.

Babies are a lot smarter than we once believed. While doctors once thought that babies were born a blank slate, research continues to prove how much information babies can receive and retain while in the womb.

Babies can hear, taste, and feel in the womb. Through various research methods, scientists have been able to understand that babies begin developing these senses in the womb, which are further seen when they are born.

For example, babies have the ability to learn the rhythm of sounds and patterns of speech.

“Muffled or not, unborn babies seem to develop a fine ear for certain sounds. Research reveals that babies had their first lessons in their native language while still in utero. They’ll suck more vigorously to turn on tape recordings of people speaking in the language of their mothers, rather than in a foreign tongue. Of course, it’s likely the babies are picking up on the rhythm and melody of the speech, rather than individual words.”- Parenting.com

Babies are also able to taste in the womb, giving mothers the ability to introduce their future newborns to a variety of flavors and food items.

Now, more than ever, parents have various reasons to read books, listen to music, try all kinds of foods, and have full vibrant conversations with their baby and others.
