Will Macy’s Close Its Short Hills Mall Store? 100 Locations Face Elimination By 2017

Macy's has been a fixture at the Mall At Short Hills for years. Will it continue that way?

SHORT HILLS, NJ — Macy’s has announced that it will be closing almost 100 stores by “early 2017,” but so far, there is no word as to whether the location at The Mall At Short Hills will be on the chopping block.

The nationwide retailer didn’t name the specific locations that are facing the axe in its Thursday news release, but said that the stores would be listed “at a later date” when the company finalizes its decisions.

Macy’s has a store in the Mall At Short Hills on Morris Turnpike, as well as nearby locations on Route 22 in Springfield, the Livingston Mall on Eisenhower Parkway, Highway 46 in Wayne and the Newport Centre Mall in Jersey City.

The Short Hills location - which is promoted as a key tenant on the Mall At Short Hills' website - is such a local fixture that it's often used as a landmark reference for other stores.

Macy's – which currently operates 728 stores including 675 "full-line" locations – stated that it plans to focus its resources on its “highest-performing” stores while pouring more into online shopping and mobile apps.

Employees who work at stores that are closing will be offered positions at nearby stores "where possible," Macy's says, and eligible part- and full-time employees will receive severance benefits.
