$450K Settlement Ended Cyber Attack On Montclair IT Department: Report
Montclair's insurer negotiated a settlement to end the attack. It cost $450,000, a report says.
MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Township of Montclair’s insurer negotiated a settlement of $450,000 with the people behind a recent “cyber incident” in order to end the attack, a report says.
The cyber attack on the town’s IT department took place on June 6, the day of the 2023 primary election. Mayor Sean Spiller said it didn’t impact the safety and security of local voting systems.
The Garden State Joint Insurance Fund made the deal as law enforcement began investigations into possible criminal charges, interim town manager Joseph Hartnett told Montclair Local/Baristanet last week.

Some data belonging to individual users still remains to be recovered, along with some data connected to outside vendors that serve the township with the storage of past records, Montclair Local/Baristanet reported.
The town has beefed up its security measures in the wake of the incident, Hartnett said.
