Montclair's Third Annual Earth Fest Returns April 26th
Free celebration brings residents together to explore eco-friendly alternatives and local environmental initiatives
Montclair Township's <a href="https://www.montclairnjusa.org/Government/Departments/Department-of-Sustainability" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Department of Sustainability</a>, the Montclair Center Business Improvement District (BID), and Drive Electric are thrilled to announce the return of Earth Fest, the community's premier sustainability celebration. The third annual event will take place on Sunday, April 26th, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM at South Street Park (between Bloomfield Avenue and Church Street).
Building on the success of previous years, Earth Fest 2026 promises an afternoon of education, exploration, and inspiration for residents of all ages. The free event brings together the Montclair community to highlight practical ways residents can adopt more sustainable habits while showcasing the Township's ongoing efforts to create a more resilient community.
What to Expect
Attendees will enjoy a wide array of activities and opportunities to engage with sustainability:

The Montclair Public Library invites families with children in grades K to 8 to join us for The Courage To Care: Inspiring a New Generation on Sunday, April 26, 2026 @ 3:00 PM at the Main Branch.
Compelling research on well-being and reducing stress shows that a commitment to helping others may be one key to happiness for all ages. Seeing ourselves as part of something bigger, as making a difference in someone else’s life, can provide our own lives with a sense of purpose and meaning. Children’s literature has always explored the importance of kindness, helping and standing up for others, and moral courage.
The April 26th event will feature Montclair authors Dan Gill and Janice Cohn, who will read from their respective books, No More Chairs and Freedom Pancakes for Ukraine. Both books explore moral courage in ways that resonate with children today. Additionally, several middle school and high school students, who were honored as Upstanders at the library’s event in December, will read excerpts from favorite books to inspire young people to act with kindness and compassion or to advocate for their community. A book list curated by students attending Montclair’s public and private middle schools and high schools will be available as a takeaway.
About Dr. Janice Cohn
Dr. Janice Cohn is a psychotherapist who specializes in helping adults and children cope with grief, loss, and life transitions. Her noted book, Raising Compassionate, Courageous Children In A Violent World (Longstreet Press) and her former newspaper column for The Washington Times, Instilling Compassion, focused on the importance of raising compassionate and morally courageous children. Janice Cohn’s most recent children’s book is Freedom Pancakes for Ukraine.
About Dan Gill
Dan Gill is a children’s book author and a lifelong educator who spent more than fifty years teaching social studies at Glenfield Middle School in Montclair, New Jersey. A passionate storyteller and advocate for empathy, Dan lives in New Jersey with his family. No More Chairs is his first picture book, inspired by a powerful experience from his own childhood. With the publication of No More Chairs, Dan invites readers of all ages to reflect on the meaning of allyship, inclusion, and compassion.

Portraits, guided by Theatre department practitioners.

Participants will explore a visual arts technique such as collage, clay 
sculpting, or mixed media and create a unique work. Guided by an artist 
educator, attendees will learn simple methods and experiment with 
materials during the session. 
Snap Snap: Taking Just the Right Picture 
1:30-2:45 p.m., Feliciano School of Business Lawn 
This digital photography workshop will start with a presentation on the 
powerful choices available for capturing and documenting the world with 
your camera. Each participant will be given directions for taking a 
photograph from a specific location on campus. Jenelle Covino, Adjunct 
Professor of Art and Design, will guide participants to utilize basic 
photo retouching principles to bring each digital photograph to life. 
You can bring your digital camera or use your cell phone to photograph 
for this workshop. This workshop is suitable for all ages and all 
experience levels of photography. 
Drumming Up a Crowd, the West African Way 
3:00-4:15 p.m.; Feliciano School of Business Lawn 
The Montclair State University West African Drumming and Dance Ensemble 
will perform and engage everyone to participate in traditional West 
African recreational music. We play a strong weave of polyrhythms on 
traditional drums, bells and rattles, and those in attendance will drum 
with us, sing with us in call and response in a West African language, 
and dance traditional movements with us, directed by calls from the lead
 drum. 
Let’s Get Physical: Writing Poetry about Memory and the Body 
4:30-5:45 p.m. Feliciano School of Business Room 140 
In this generative poetry workshop, we will begin by bringing our 
memories to life on the page. We will then expand to writing about 
embodied experiences. Participants will leave this workshop having 
written two new poems and having received feedback on one of the poems. 
They will also leave with a few additional tools in their writers’ 
toolbox.
