What's going wrong with our crazy society and culture today? Add your ideas to the discussion and learn ideas from other local residents in this free brainstorming event, Sunday May 17 from 3:00 to 5:30pm.

BEAM (Building Essex Area Mutuality) is holding an open discussion to hear community members' views on culture, and on cultural changes that are needed. Come help us imagine – What would a better future look like?

In this event, we're asking about changes to culture – today's human issues like greed, us-versus-them, adversarial competition, hierarchy and elitism, dominance and power, ego and arrogance, selfishness and individualism, status-seeking, topic taboos, suspicion and mistrust, disconnection and isolation.

Our hope is that all of these issues can be addressed through the lens of mutuality – the personal connections, sense of belonging, meaningfulness, caring, support, familiarity, and visibility that tie us to our communities, families, friends, and neighbors.

(In this event, we're not directly focusing on related consequences like wars, politics, technologies, religions, economics, poverty, etc.)

Do you like to think about root causes and deep solutions for societal troubles? Come share your ideas in our discussion. We all need your participation.

We'll meet in a relaxed, living room setting with whiteboards and post-its for taking notes, comfy chairs, and refreshments. We'll also have some breakout groups and fun art-making activities, to vary our thinking and foster creativity.

Location: 153 Park Street in Montclair, entrance on the right-hand side of the First Lutheran Church building, near Montclair High School. Parking is free.

RSVP required! – online at tinyurl.com/beam-future
