Gill vs. Codey: Democratic Primary Race Heats Up In NJ-27
Sen. Nia Gill has announced her running mates. A showdown with Sen. Richard Codey looms in the 2023 New Jersey primary election.

NEW JERSEY — Things are heating up in what may prove to be one of the most compelling legislative races in New Jersey’s 2023 primary election: the Democratic Party contest between Sen. Richard Codey and Sen. Nia Gill.
Earlier this week, Gill announced her running mates in the quest for a seat in the 27th District. Eve Robinson of Montclair and Frank Kasper of Clifton will be seeking seats in the New Jersey Assembly alongside Gill, who shared her campaign announcement on Patch. >> Find out how to post news or events to your local Patch site
“For 12 terms in the Legislature, I have fought for the people’s right to transparency into how their government works and the decision-making processes that shape public policy, for accountability to guarantee our government answers to the citizens it serves, and to ensure that people can access the democratic process and have their voices heard,” Gill wrote.

Gill’s slate will be matching up against another Democratic Party heavyweight in Codey – a former governor who has been serving in the Legislature for more than four decades – as well as veteran Assembly Democrats John McKeon and Thomas Giblin, another transplant from the 34th District.
The upcoming primary election clash between the two Democratic senators is a result of the mandatory redistricting that takes place every 10 years. As a result, several towns were shifted to nearby districts – including the 27th, which added Montclair and Clifton, but lost Caldwell, Chatham Township, East Hanover, Essex Fells, Florham Park, Hanover, Harding, Madison, Maplewood and South Orange.
The 2023 primary election in New Jersey will take place on Tuesday, June 6. Learn more about voting in New Jersey here.
