Labor Day In Essex County: Unions, Strikes And Worker Pride
When you're grilling a burger or relaxing with the family this Labor Day, don't forget what brought you the holiday in the first place.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — When you’re grilling a burger or relaxing with the family this Labor Day weekend, don’t forget what brought you the holiday in the first place, advocates say: the U.S. workers’ movement.
Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the contributions that workers have made to America’s “strength, prosperity and well-being,” the U.S. Department of Labor says.
In New Jersey, membership in labor unions grew slightly from 2020 to 2021 according to federal statistics. Union members accounted for 16.2 percent of wage and salary workers in the Garden State last year, up from 16.1 percent in 2020.
