MHS Students to Join Global Walkout to Protest Climate Change

Students from Montclair Extinction Rebellion (Montclair XR), a club at Montclair High School, will lead and be part of a national walkout on Friday, September 20 at 10am to protest global climate change. The walkout, which will be held on the MHS campus, will be held in coordination with a global climate strike that includes over 40 non-profit organizations from around the world, including Amnesty International, Global Climate Catholic Movement, Patagonia, Fridays for Future, and Oxfam.

“Extreme times call for extreme measures and we’re asking MHS students to start doing their part by joining us in the walkout,” says Josh Shapiro ‘21 and Isaac Barry ‘21, co-spokespeople of Montclair XR. “We hold the firm belief that inaction on Climate Change is a crime against humanity, a threat to our economy, a danger to our health and that ecocide is equivalent to genocide. Mass action is unquestionably required to stop its worst effects.”

While the MHS walkout is a one day event, the national Global Climate Strike will take place from September 20 through 27 in locations around the world. It was inspired by Greta Thunberg, a 16 year-old Swedish girl who became one of the world’s leading climate change activists after she led a three week student strike at her high school in Stockholm.

The Montclair Extinction Rebellion walkout will take place on Friday, September 20 at Montclair High School from 10 to 10:45am at the amphitheater on Park Street. Seven student speakers from the club will be featured at the event.
