Montclair 2020 Election Will Be ‘Mail-In’ Only: Coronavirus

COVID-19 has changed the way Montclair will run its 2020 municipal election.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — The new coronavirus has changed the way Montclair will run its 2020 municipal election, officials announced Monday.

Montclair’s election – set for Tuesday, May 12 – will now be conducted entirely through mail-in ballots as a result of Gov. Phil Murphy’s recent executive order, township officials said, citing a statement from Essex County Clerk Christopher Durkin.

All registered voters in Montclair, including inactive voters (people whose sample ballots have been returned to the county as undeliverable), will be sent a vote-by-mail ballot, officials said.

Montclair township officials continued:

“In order to allow candidates enough time to campaign, and to also allow for enough time for the voter to receive the ballot, vote the ballot and return the ballot; the county clerk’s office will commence the mailing of vote-by-mail ballots on April 21, 2020. This will allow 29 days from today for candidates to connect with voters the best way they see fit under this very serious health crisis.”
