MONTCLAIR, NJ — A Montclair-based Boy Scout group recently took a trip up Mt. Baldy in New Mexico as part of an “ultimate hiking trek,” its members reported.

The sojourn by Troop 13 in Montclair took place at the Philmont Scout Ranch, one of only three high adventure camps for Boy Scouts, according to Toby Baer.

“The reservation stretches for 140,177 acres, and scouts around the nation travel to experience the tough terrain, and enjoy the views from 12,000+ feet,” Baer told Patch. “Our trek included climbing Mt. Baldy, which measures 12,441 feet up.”

The trip spanned several days from July 28 to August 12, and included activities such as visiting the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, shooting black power rifles, mountain biking, hiking with burros (donkeys) and whitewater rafting.

The actual hiking included 80+ miles throughout the scout ranch, Baer said.
