Montclair Cops Catch Alleged Home Burglar After Foot Chase

Montclair officers saw the West Orange man exiting a Sutherland Road home, police said.

Montclair, NJ – Montclair police have charged a West Orange man with burglarizing a Sutherland Road home while the residents were downstairs, authorities say.

According to the Montclair Police Department, officers responded to a report of a possible burglary in progress on May 27, after the residents – who were in the home at the time – heard noises upstairs and called 9-1-1.

On arrival, officers encountered a man walking out of the home later identified as Nicholas Bennett, 22, of West Orange. As the officers approached, Bennett fled northbound on Harrison Avenue, police said.

The officers apprehended Bennett on North Brookwood Drive after a foot pursuit, authorities said.

Police charged Bennett with burglary, theft, obstruction by flight and resisting arrest.

There were no reported injuries, police said.
