MONTCLAIR, NJ — A pair of Montclair residents and longtime Girl Scout boosters will appear on cookie boxes across the nation as part of the organization’s famous, annual sale.

As part of their packaging overhaul for 2020, the Girl Scouts are featuring current and former members on boxes of their eponymous cookies. This year, two girls from Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey made the cut: “Samiyah A.” and “Christel B.”

Samiyah is appearing on the new Lemon-Ups cookie package, while Christel will be featured on the Thin Mints box.

Samiyah, a junior in high school, said the Girl Scouts have opened the door to many opportunities.

“It feels unreal to be selected,” she said. “I really can’t believe it. I sent in my photos without much belief that they would select me. My acceptance makes me believe I am capable of achieving many things.”

Christel, a freshman at The College of New Jersey in Ewing who is studying nursing and is an ROTC Army cadet, was chosen for a different reason: she was asked to help with the younger girls during the photoshoot, but ultimately became part of the shoot herself.

“I received an email asking for assistance on the set to watch the younger girls,” Christel said. “When they asked me to participate, I jumped at the opportunity. I can’t believe I’m on the box!”

Both girls, who have been involved in the group for years, said the programs and opportunities in Girl Scouting have taught them about community involvement, leadership and helping others.
