Montclair Home Rendered ‘Uninhabitable’ After Fire: Officials

Montclair firefighters - aided by several of their Essex and Passaic County peers – extinguished a house fire on Montague Place.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair firefighters - aided by several of their Essex and Passaic County peers – extinguished a house fire on Montague Place Wednesday, but not before the blaze rendered the home uninhabitable, authorities say.

According to the Montclair Fire Department, nobody was injured but the house was “uninhabitable.” All of the residents had evacuated by the time firefighters arrived, and the blaze was under control within an hour.

Mutual aid units from Clifton, West Orange, Bloomfield, and East Orange responded to the fire scene while units from Orange, Verona, and Cedar Grove covered the township, officials said.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene in support of the residents of the home, officials said.

Fire damage was complete to the third-floor attic area, water damage to the first and second floors. Firefighters cut a hole in the roof for ventilation during the incident, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
