Montclair fire officials reportedly evacuated multiple homes on Midland Avenue due to elevated carbon monoxide levels.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — Montclair fire officials temporarily evacuated multiple homes on Midland Avenue on Tuesday due to elevated carbon monoxide levels, a report says.
Montclair fire officials arrived at a Midland Avenue residence after the homeowner reported issues with their boiler, finding a smoke condition in the basement and elevated carbon monoxide levels, TAP Into Montclair stated.
Officials said that the smoke originated from electrical panels in the basement, and that the homeowner reported hearing a popping sound and seeing electrical fluctuations.

When MFD officials checked nearby homes they found similar problems, TAP Into reported.
Montclair Fire Department Deputy Chief Robert Duncan said that PSE&G responded to the scene and determined that the issue was caused by a malfunctioning underground transformer that pushed smoke through the underground conduit into the homes.
