Montclair Resident Earns MKA's Captain's Award

...Cougars senior pitcher Brooks Barrett honored

(Montclair Kimberley Academy senior pitcher received the prestigious MKA Captain's Award for the recently-completed 2025 season. )

Montclair resident Brooks Barrett, who was a standout senior pitcher for Montclair Kimberley Academy’s baseball team during the recently-completed season, has been honored with the 2025 MKA Spring Captain’s Award.

“Congratulations to MKA Baseball co-captain Brooks Barrett ’25, the recipient of the MKA Spring Captain’s Award,” said MKA Athletic Director Todd Smith. “The MKA Captain's Award is given out each season to the MKA team captain who has exhibited the qualities that we look for in our team captains: leadership, dedication, respect, work ethic, and being a role model both on and off the field to his or her teammates and peers.”

Barrett was a key starting pitcher for the Cougars who finished 18-7 overall and 8-2 in the Super Essex Conference-Colonial Division while tying with Cedar Grove for the conference title. He had a fine 2.36 ERA while working 35 2/3 IP allowing 31 hits while walking 14 and striking out 29. He also drove in 11 runs at the plate.

“Winning this award is a great reflection of Brooks’ exceptional leadership and contributions to the team and speaks volumes of how much of a selfless leader he is,” said MKA head coach Mike Sasso. “This accolade highlights his dedication and commitment, reflecting the respect he has earned from his peers and coaches alike.

“The underclassmen look up to him with admiration and for support and guidance and he does a great job with making the younger players feel included and feel very much a part of our team.

“He has excelled in ensuring that our team stays focused and resilient regardless of the circumstances and against the toughest of opponents. His commitment to continuous improvement and personal accountability has set a positive example, encouraging his peers to elevate their performance as well and his ability to inspire and motivate his teammates fostered a strong sense of unity and purpose within the team. He simply has helped shift the entire culture of our program.”
