Montclair School Budget Would Mean Tax Increase For Homeowners

The Montclair Public School District has submitted a $135 million proposed budget. Here's what it would mean for local homeowners.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair Public School District has submitted a $135 million proposed budget to county officials, and it would mean a tax increase for the average homeowner.

For a home valued at $627,995, the estimated district school tax levy will increase by $214, school officials said.

School taxes are one part of a local resident’s property tax, along with municipal and county taxes. See the district’s full budget presentation here.

Superintendent Jonathan Ponds offered a statement about the budget on Friday:

“The budget is still a work in progress as we look to create one that is forward-looking and prepared with an emphasis on building for the future. We are committed to seeking grants to supplement our revenues that will provide resources to develop programming in areas such as Pre-K, extended school day, and Saturday learning opportunities. All are invited to attend board meetings and the Board of School Estimate (BOSE) meetings where details of the budget are discussed.”
